Metropolitan Press invites you to our October ArtSpace show and Artist Reception. Enjoy the work of Nicola Semenchuk Brady in her show titled Roots and Wings, featuring pen and ink drawings bringing to life her family’s time in the Air Force.

Nicola Semenchuk Brady was born in England and lived in South Africa with her parents and sister throughout her elementary years. Her family returned to England where she pursued art in school and after completing A Levels, earned a Diploma in Art and Design. While in high school she met an American, an Air Force service member. Two years later they married and six months later received orders to the U.S. Together they traveled around the country on many an adventure. She has an Associates of Liberal Arts from Spokane Community College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas Woman’s University.

Nicola enjoys working with watercolor and mixed media and has always had an affinity for pen and ink works such as: Quentin Blake’s, Beatrix Potter’s and M.C. Escher’s. While recently visiting the Little D Gallery in Oklahoma City, she was acquainted with the contemporary artist Denise Duong, and was mesmerized by her large pen and ink pieces. She was so impacted by these works that a series of pen and ink illustrations, related to her experiences with military life, percolated and formed in her mind right there in the gallery. Roots and Wings is a culmination of these recollections as seen through her and her son’s eyes.

According to the artist,

The works may not be easily identifiable as experiences within the Air Force culture since some of them are analogies of certain experiences. However, most viewers will be able to relate to the themes of relocation, loss, displacement, alighting and faith versus anxiety.

Find Nicola on Instagram, Nicola Semenchuk Brady and meet her in person at the Artist Reception this Thursday, October 17 from 5pm to 8pm. Please join us!
